Encircled by the horse-shoe-shaped course of the Sûre and surrounded by wooded cliffs plunging more than 300 ft to the river below, Esch-sur-Sûre has a deserved reputation as one of the most attractive bauty spots in the Grand Duchy.
Perched on a massive rock overlooking the town, the ruins of the medieval castle have witnessed more than 12 centuries of turbulent history while the origins of the fort date back to 927 AD. These ruins are wonderfully floodlit during the season and are open to visitors all year round.

But traditions and respect for the past have not stood in the way of progress, and the successful blending of old and new is especially noticeable since the construction of the famous dam. The resultant huge stretch of water not only provides drinking water for the whole region but also adds another dimension to the timeless hills which endow the Ardennes with their unique charm.

Leaving aside the passive admiration of such outstanding natural beauty, we turn now to consideration of more active leisure pursuits and here too, Esch-sur-Sûre can amply satisfy even the most demanding of visitors with:

  • 20 miles of walks with spectacular panoramic views
  • trails for motorists and walkers
  • watersports (incl. swimming, canoeing, water-skiing, sailing, yachting, wind-surfing, scuba-diving and fishing)
  • mini-golf
  • children’s playgrounds
In high season, the Tourist Board organises a series of concerts and other typical local attractions.
With our comfortable hotels, numerous chalets and holiday flats, two first-class camping sites, quality restaurants and friendly cafés, Ech-sur-Sûre can guarantee you a thoroughly pleasant and restful stay while offering you at the same time a wide variety of interesting things to do.

Esch-sur-Sûre is magnificent in every season
